The “R” Word
January 23, 2008 by andreamcmann
Rejection. It’s something all writers face. As a fairly new freelance writer, I spend most of my time querying, and reading the subsequent rejections. It’s not that I’m a horrible writer, it’s just that I’ve chosen a career where the rejection rate is very high. I once read that for every article that is published, 100 articles are rejected.
I have learned not to get my hopes up too much when querying or submitting an article, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t feel the sting of rejection. However, there are a few great websites that have helped me wash the bitter taste of the “R” word out of my mouth. Grab a fellow reject to commiserate with, and take a look at these sites:
-
Rejectioncollection.com features a great collection of real rejection letters. Click on “Read ‘em and Weep.”
-
A positive article about your first rejection
-
An article about what to do After Rejection
-
Overcoming Discouragement by Scott H. Young
Or, if you’re a DIY-type of freelancer, simply Google “Freelance Rejection.” The abundance of results from this search will help you realize that you’re not alone. Not even remotely! ![]()

I can’t wait for the rejections to start pouring in! (Blah!)
At least it will mean I’m really putting my work out there, which is a huge goal of mine. I want so much out there waiting for a response that I get responses every day!
Hopefully, I get lots of good answers too.
